LIVESTOCK GUARDIAN DOGS

Information
Livestock guardian dogs are exactly what the name implies. They guard livestock. They are typically large and size intemidating. Their size is their best offence. Guardian dogs are typically free thinkers. That is they work without human commands. They typically lay around and sleep through most of the day. At night, they work. This involves slow patrols and periodic barks. Guardian dog are NOT herding dogs. Herding is a preditory instinct.

We use Great Pyrenees for our herds protection. Our dogs have been with our herd of Boer Goats from an early age. There are many opinions about the amount of human contact the dogs should have with humans. Our dogs get human contact with young children we need to trust the dogs. We do not let the children play catch or chase with the dogs. This is a bad trait for the dogs to learn. Even if, it is cute for a 20 to 40 pound puff ball to play with children. It is not cute or safe for a 125 pound young dog, that wants to play, land on a 60 pound child. We (including the children) will pet and talk to the dogs at feeding time or when we are working with the animals. This get the dogs to trust us, and to be comfortable around us.

We breed our dog only as an addition to our main program of producing goat meat. We sell pups and experienced dogs. Based on our needs and their availablity. It is not advise to have a bred dog trying to protect bred does or does with young kids. At these time we like to have more dog rather than fewer. Therefore, please contact us by email or phone. We will let you know what is available and when.
